LIRR power problems
Multiple Long Island Rail Road trains were delayed and canceled during the Tuesday morning rush due to an Amtrak third rail power issue in the East River tunnel, according to the MTA. Two LIRR trains were stuck underground for more than an hour as a result of the power loss. Amtrak said it was trying to determine the cause of the malfunction.
Penn Station repairs
As commuters brace for a so-called summer of hell at Penn Station, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has called for a state takeover of the embattled transit hub. With Amtrak planning to cut train service by 20 percent for six weeks while it makes some long-overdue repairs, Cuomo told Good Day New York that he has serious doubts about the timetable and if Amtrak can even get the job done.

Cheaper commute?
The Freedom Ticket would give the commuter the freedom to ride whatever mode of transportation meets their needs in a given area. The ticket would allow unlimited free transfers across LIRR and MTA bus and subway lines for a flat rate. While it hasn't been determined what that rate would be, it would be significantly less than the cost of separate tickets.
