Bronx girl becomes honorary firefighter

Honorary firefighter is a distinction not many receive. But then again, very few are as deserving as Jamoni Merritt. In August, the 11-year-old girl from the Bronx was at a sleepover she'll never forget. After dozing off, she woke up with burns to over 85 percent of her face after one of her friends threw boiling water at her in an attempted prank.

Several other remembrance and dedication ceremonies were held throughout the city. Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams unveiled a banner with the names of the 266 Brooklyn residents who died on that fateful day.

The federal government admitted that it can't do all the rescue work in Texas itself and openly asked for help. Urban search-and-rescue teams from New Jersey geared up for their life-saving mission.

Subway derailment in Manhattan

Their injuries are not considered life-threatening, officials said. Passengers described the train vibrating wildly and bucking as it went off the rails. All of the customers evacuated the train through darkened subway tunnels.

Rally for shuttered firehouse in Queens

Residents of Long Island City, Queens, say it is time to reopen a firehouse that closed over a decade ago because they fear the neighborhood has grown too quickly for current firehouses to keep up. Firefighters and City Council members rallied Friday to reopen Engine Company 261. The engine company controversially closed in 2003. It was one of five throughout the city that fell victim to budget cuts under Mayor Michael Bloomberg. But that was 14 years ago and a lot has changed since then in Long Island City.

Partial building collapse

Construction materials crashed through the roof of a building under renovation in Queens Tuesday afternoon. Three workers were hurt. One of them was trapped for almost two hours. The incident happened at 31-25 28th Road in Astoria around 4 p.m. A crane placed the materials on the roof, which then gave way. The materials fell all the way down to the basement level, the FDNY said.

Carbon monoxide leak

Initial reports of a suspicious package containing an unknown substance were unfounded, according to fire officials. That early concern prompted the NYPD bomb squad and FBI agents to respond to the scene.

Funeral for a hero

Thousands of firefighters stood together dressed in blue to remember their fallen brother, Firefighter William Tolley, a 14-year FDNY veteran who died in the line of duty last week after falling from an apartment building in Queens. His casket was draped with the FDNY flag as it was brought into St. Martin of Tours Roman Catholic Church in Bethpage. His wife Marie followed with her daughter, Bella, 8, who wore her father's dress cap. Inside, they sang Bella's favorite song. Her uncle, Robert, says his brother was born to be a firefighter.

Firefighter remembered

Bunting hangs at the entrance of William Tolley's firehouse in Ridgewood. The bunting is a symbol of a firehouse in mourning. Flowers, support, and love continue to stream in for the senior firefighter who gave the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.

Cop honored

Had Daniel McDade not been stuck in traffic on March 16, several other people would likely be dead. The MTA police officer was taking a shortcut in the Soundview section of the Bronx when he witnessed a young man carjacking an FDNY ambulance. The thief ran over EMT Yadira Arroyo, dragging her down the street and killing her.

The DOI is randomly interviewing rookie firefighters with two years on the job to determine whether "a culture of hazing" exists within the department, according to the Uniformed Firefighters Association.
