What to do with your Christmas tree after the holidays

As the glitter fades and the lights dim, it’s clear: the holidays are almost over.

Time to savor what’s left—or at least tackle the leftovers. That includes the Christmas tree!

The NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) provides several options on how to responsibly dispose of your Christmas tree after the holidays.

Artificial Tree Disposal

For artificial trees, separate the metal base and trunk. Recycle those parts with your other metal items.

Mulchfest and Chipping Weekend

Join Mulchfest's Chipping Weekend on Jan. 11-12. Bring your tree to any Mulchfest location across the five boroughs between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Parks Department staff will chip your tree into mulch.

46,626 trees were recycled last year, according to the event's website.

You can:

  • Take home mulch for your garden.
  • Donate mulch to support NYC tree planting and composting efforts.

When does the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree come down?

Still haven't seen the Rockefeller Christmas Tree? The good news is, you'll have plenty of time after Christmas.

Curbside Composting

DSNY collects live Christmas trees and wreaths as part of its weekly Curbside Composting service on your regular recycling day. No appointment is necessary.

To prepare your tree or wreath for collection:

  • Remove all stands, lights, ornaments, and tinsel.
  • Do not place the tree in a bag.

Trees with decorations cannot be composted. Properly prepared trees are chipped, mixed with leaves, and turned into compost for NYC parks, institutions, and community gardens.

For more details on Christmas tree collection, visit www.nyc.gov/dsny or call 311. To learn about Mulchfest locations, check nycgovparks.org.
