Rockland County: 5 dead, several injured in overnight house fire
New York - At least five people are dead and five hospitalized in an overnight house fire in Spring Valley, according to officials.
Officials say that there was a report of a structure fire at 4:03 a.m. at 118 Lake St.
Multiple efforts were made to try to get into the building, but officials said "the conditions weren't good, and it was impossible" to get in.
"The situation was extremely difficult," says Ed Day, Rockland County Executive.
Five people were injured and taken to local hospitals, and five died on the scene. Two of them were under the age of 18, according to police. A firefighter was also injured and treated on the scene.
It is still unclear how many occupants were at the residence at the time of the fire.
Rockland County officials say it was a two-story dwelling.
Officials also say the residence was not required to be inspected on an annual basis, but they looked into the property's history in order to aid in the investigation.
County officials found the residence had municipal inspections that came back with a number of violations but were subsequently cleared.
The second and most recent inspection came back clear, and no violations were noted.
The cause and origin of the fire is still under investigation.
