Possible car explosion in Queens damages homes

Fire officials are investigating a possible car explosion that took place on 133rd Street in Queens.

A car caught fire Friday morning on 133rd Street in a residential neighborhood in Queens.

Residents reported hearing a loud sound before seeing the car in flames.

The explosion damaged nearly six homes and two vehicles in Ozone Park, according to FDNY officials.

The explosion was captured on a Ring camera, showing the moment the car burst into flames.

Fire officials discovered small tools with lithium batteries and gasoline in the back of the car, stating that the fire was caused by a leaking pressurized gas cylinder inside the vehicle.

The vehicle’s owner, Dinell Harricharen, says he was not at the scene when the explosion happened but was devastated when he saw the damage. Harricharen, who works in plumbing services, said the vehicle was his personal car that he uses as a work vehicle.

"I thought somebody dropped something in the car," he said, adding that the vehicle was essential for his work. He said he was thankful that no one was injured despite the significant damage.

Fire officials confirmed that the explosion damaged nearby structures and mangled power lines, prompting a response from Con Edison crews to address the downed lines.

SkyFOX flew over the area, where a heavy police presence was observed. Firefighters were able to put out the fire, and no injuries have been reported.
