NYC bomb squad finds explosive device in Harlem

Police say a fight between two cousins led to the discovery of a homemade "potentially viable improvised explosive device" inside a car in East Harlem on Wednesday morning.

Police say a domestic dispute led to a homemade "potentially viable improvised explosive device" being discovered inside a car in East Harlem on Wednesday morning. 

Chontrell Wrencik, 50, the man accused of having the device, is facing multiple charges, including reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a bomb, and assault.

Law enforcement sources told FOX 5 NY that two male cousins pulled up to the 25th Precinct in East Harlem at 11:50 a.m. in a car.

The driver of the car said he was the victim of a domestic assault by the passenger, who attacked the driver with a machete.

The victim then told the officers about the location of the machete, and the weapon was secured while the suspect was immediately apprehended and taken into custody in the station house.

Likely pipe bomb found in Harlem

Police said during a press conference that a likely homemade pipe bomb was discovered in Harlem on Wednesday. Sources tell FOX 5 NY the case involves two cousins who were in a domestic dispute.

Further into the investigation, the victim indicated that there was an explosive device inside the vehicle.

Police immediately called the ESU and bomb squad to investigate, and a device was located and secured. 

Police say that if the device was viable, it could have caused death or serious physical injury to anyone nearby and property damage.

Both the suspect and the victim reportedly have at least 10-20 previous arrests, but no recent arrests within the last 5-10 years. The arrests are considered "minimal."
