What is the 'Electoral Count Reform Act'?

Much of the anxiety from election officials and experts in the post-election period involved the certification of the election. Now, there is a new law in effect for the first time called the Electoral Count Reform Act. Constitutional law expert at Hofstra University James Sample explains.

NEW YORK - President-elect Donald Trump won the Nov. 5th election but he isn’t president yet.

The next steps to confirm his electoral college victory include 538 electors gathering in all 50 states and DC to formally vote in a largely symbolic process.

Vice President Kamala Harris will then oversee Congress' certification of her election loss.

The last time this happened was in 1960, when Vice President Richard Nixon certified John F. Kennedy as the winner.

How many electoral votes does each state have?

In the race for the White House, a candidate will have to win 270 of the 538 total electoral votes to win the 2024 presidential election.

Electoral votes are allocated among the states based on the Census. Each state has the same number of electors as it does members in its Congressional delegation: one for each member in the House of Representatives plus two Senators.
