NYPD training more women to be K-9 officers

Fox 5 got a look at how NYPD canine teams train at a facility on Staten Island. About a hundred police officers in the NYPD work with police dogs. Just nine of them are women. But Officer Christina Orlando and Detective Kristen Collins are hoping that number grows.

Garner case delayed

Nearly four years after the death of Eric Garner, the federal case is now in the hands of the Trump administration. Federal civil rights prosecutors are recommending charges against NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo. But the Justice Department is split on whether the case should move forward, according to the New York Times. The Obama administration authorized prosecutors to pursue an indictment. But Attorney General Jeff Sessions has pulled back on investigations against police.

Volunteers rebuild neighbors' homes

Superstorm Sandy ravaged the tristate area more than five years ago, yet hundreds of New York City homes are still feeling the effects. Leone John, a homeowner on Staten Island, says Sandy destroyed her electricity and carpeting. Water seeps through her home nearly every time it rains. It's been a long road, but as of Friday, the single mother of two can proudly call her house a home again, thanks to the collaborative work of Rebuilding Together NYC and NYCHA. Volunteers have started to gut renovate John's bathroom, kitchen, and more.

Condo manager under investigation

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and New York City's Human Rights Commission have opened separate investigations into the manager of a Queens condominium building where the lobby is adorned with images of weapons, Hitler, and Confederate generals and where residents say they're scared to complain out of fear of retaliation.

NYC 12 X 12 social experiment

Christina Horsten and Felix Zeltner feel right at home in the St. George section of Staten Island -- at least for the next few days. It is one of 12 neighborhoods the couple and their 2-year-old daughter have lived in over the past 12 months as part of a sort of social experiment to experience the vastly different sights, sounds, flavors and personalities that New York City has to offer.

Trump voters remain loyal

President Donald Trump has a very loyal following on Staten Island, but Trump is under fire again this week amid news reports about his dealings with Russia. So we asked Staten Island voters if their opinion of the president has changed. These supporters said that whatever Trump does, big or small, they feel he gets blown up by critics more than previous presidents.
