National Geographic Encounter: Ocean Odyssey

This isn't the National Geographic you thumbed through as a child. From sharks going under your feet to sea lions meeting you face to face, the latest National Geographic show isn't in your magazine – it is larger than life in Times Square. And it is not an article, but a fully immersive experience.

Times Square goes gold

Times Square shined a light on the fight against pediatric cancer. For Cathleen Boorse and her daughter Hannah, their first experience in Times Square was honoring the 13-year-old girl and all children battling pediatric cancer. The Times Square Advertising Coalition illuminated nearly one dozen digital screens in gold. In its fourth year, the event's goal is to bring attention to the disease and the need to fund research for a cure.

Antics of Times Square characters

From not keeping their hands to themselves, to harassing pedestrians, the complaints are up again against the Naked Ladies of Times Square and the costumed characters that roam the area for tips, according to the NY Post. The panhandlers who solicit tips for photos have designated areas to operate but on any given afternoon this summer only half of the two-dozen workers reportedly stayed behind the blue lines.

Times Square suspect

The NYPD investigation continued Thursday night at the Bronx home of Richard Rojas, 26, the man in custody for allegedly running down almost two dozen people in Times Square. Detectives searched for clues that can help them figure out what the motive was behind the tragedy. Crime scene tape blocked the entrance of the home as detectives searched it.

Ken Bradix runs security at Planet Hollywood, less than a block away from where Richard Rojas bailed out of his crashed car and tried to make a break for it. Bradix ran to the middle of the street and he and a traffic agent tackled Rojas to the ground while cops raced over to cuff him. He said Rojas seemed like he was on something.

Tourist killed

Alyssa Elsman, 18, of Michigan was visiting New York with her family when tragedy struck. A car jumped a curb and plowed into 23 people, killing Alyssa and injuring her 13-year-old sister. Administrators at Portage Public Schools in Grand Rapids that Elsman graduated from Portage Central High School in 2016. The school was going to have counselors available to students on Friday.

Car crashes into people in Times Square

A car speeding in the wrong direction on 7th Avenue in busy Times Square jumped a curb, drove on the sidewalk for three blocks, plowed into dozens of pedestrians, and finally crashed into a pole. One woman was killed and 22 others were hurt, four of them critically. Onlookers then chased and captured the driver as he tried to run away from the scene. The violent incident unfolded just before noon on a hot, clear day that had brought crowds of tourists and Manhattan workers into the area.

Leila Rem was inside a coffee shop in Times Square when she saw a vehicle jump the curb and plow into pedestrians. Rem says there were bodies laying on the street.
