NYC gridlock alert days

New York City is finally officially acknowledging what many locals already knew: that the city has many more than just 10 so-called gridlock alert days. City officials increased the number of gridlock alert days to 16 for 2018, beginning on September 24. Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg said the city is adding six days related to the U.N. General Assembly when heads of state and many other dignitaries will be in town.

Judge tosses town's traffic ban

Leonia, New Jersey, plans to seek to reverse a judge's ruling striking down its ordinance that banned nonresident drivers from using some of its streets as shortcuts to the George Washington Bridge into New York. Leonia adopted an ordinance in January in response to traffic congestion and safety issues caused by navigation apps sending motorists through town to the bridge.

BQE repairs

While many commuters are dreading the L train shutdown in 2019, the closures on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway in Brooklyn could be even worse. One level carries the BQE eastbound. The other level carries the BQE westbound. The topmost level supports the Brooklyn Promenade.

Route 495 repair work

A major rehabilitation project is happening at the Route 495 viaduct on the New Jersey side. The plan is to close two lanes on the bridge near the Lincoln Tunnel. The project won't be complete until 2021, so it will snarl traffic in and out of the city for a long time.

Driver charged in intersection deaths

Authorities have charged a Staten Island woman for driving through a red light and running over two children, killing them, in a Brooklyn crosswalk two months ago. A grand jury on Wednesday indicted Dorothy Bruns on 10 counts, including manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, and assault charges. Police then arrested her at her home.

Sounding more like he was leading a pep rally than making a policy announcement, Mayor Bill de Blasio unveiled New York City's plan to ban cars from certain roads in Central Park. Some groups have been lobbying for a car-free Central Park for decades.

Safer streets

Saying time is of the essence, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced three proposals to change state laws aimed at keeping dangerous drivers off city roads: Install more speed cameras in school zones, increase the fees on red-light and speed camera violations, and require physicians to report to the DMV when patients have medical conditions or incidents that may cause them to suddenly lose consciousness.

Car hits pedestrians

A car struck a group of pedestrians in Brooklyn Monday afternoon, killing two children and injuring at least two other people, the mayor said. The horrific incident happened near the intersection of 9th Street and 5th Avenue in Park Slope, Mayor Bill de Blasio said at an unrelated announcement at City Hall Monday. Responders rushed the victims to Methodist Hospital. Doctors pronounced a 1-year-old and a 4-year-old dead. Two women are being treated for injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

Vehicle ban hurts businesses

Leonia, New Jersey, has a traffic problem. Too many commuters cut through at rush hour to the George Washington Bridge. To fix that, the town tried closing some streets to outside traffic. But that seems to have created a new issue. And some local business owners say it's hurting them.
