Investigators are trying to determine why safety doors failed to close in a New York City high-rise when a deadly fire broke out. The failures allowed thick smoke to billow through the tower and kill 17 people, including eight children, in the city's deadliest fire in more than three decades.

Eric Adams appoints brother as deputy police commissioner

Former NYPD Chief of Department Phillip Banks confirmed his selection as deputy mayor for public safety on Friday. Adams also appointed his brother, retired NYPD Sergeant Bernard Adams, as a deputy police commissioner.
