Mass transit still has problems after storm

Various public transit agencies in the New York City region were still trying to get service restored on Wednesday morning after Tropical Storm Isaias caused widespread damage.

Tropical Storm Isaias battered the New York City region Tuesday and prompted the National Weather Service to activate numerous serious weather alerts for the area. 

COVID risk on subways?

An infectious disease expert at Northwell Health says New York City subways are probably not a huge risk for contracting the coronavirus. Dr. Bruce Hirsch says the subway system is very well ventilated and cleaned every day.

Everyone must wear a mask when riding mass transit in the New York area. MTA workers and employees are handing out masks to commuters on subways, buses, and trains. Also several subway stations have PPE vending machines.

Police officers escorted people out of Brooklyn's Coney Island station, the end of the line for several trains, and told them they would have to board buses to get to their destinations. Cleaners carrying bottles of bleach then boarded the trains.

New York City's subway system went silent in the early morning hours of Wednesday, as part of a plan for the normally round-the-clock system to shut down for train cleaning and to remove homeless people.
