MTA to reduce subway, bus, railroad service

Ridership on New York's subways, buses, and commuter railroads has plummeted more than 80% since authorities took drastic steps to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus amid a global pandemic. And now the MTA has announced that it will begin reducing service on Wednesday in response to that drop.

Restaurateur, author and model Barbara Elaine Smith, best known as B. Smith, has died at her home on Long Island as a result of early-onset Alzheimer ’s disease, her husband and daughter announced on Facebook on Sunday.

MTA votes to hire more cops

18 of 21 MTA board members voted Wednesday in favor of hiring 500 additional MTA Police officers to patrol subways and Long Island Railroad and Metro-North platforms in the coming year.

LIRR adds Positive Train Control on four branches

The MTA has announced that select trains running on the Far Rockaway, Long Beach, Oyster Bay and West Hempstead branches will become the latest Long Island Rail Road branches to use Positive Train Control, a signal system enhancement that works to reduce the potential for human error leading to train collisions and derailments. 

MTA wants big changes to LIRR contracts

The Transit Authority reportedly wants to nix double-time pay for certain overtime assignments, cap the number of consecutive hours worked at 16, scrutinize sick leave and give itself the option to hire private contractors whenever it wants.

Penn Station overhaul

Officials unveiled renderings of what will be the new main entrance to Penn Station. It will be located at 33rd Street and 7th Avenue and will connect commuters to the Long Island Rail Road concourse and the subways.
