Reuniting veterans and families with missing medals

Photos of some veterans who served our country with honor, some wounded on the battlefield and others made the ultimate sacrifice, were on display at Federal Hall National Memorial on Monday. All of these men were awarded the Purple Heart. But sometimes the prestigious medal is misplaced, lost or stolen and when that happens, the nonprofit organization Purple Hearts Reunited steps in.

Suffolk County traffic court for veterans

It is known as Veterans Docket Day. It is designed to give special consideration to former service members. Suffolk has at least 75,000 veterans -- more than any other county in the state. When they return home, some face outstanding fines or license suspensions that in many cases they didn't even know they had.

The words fearless, dedicated, adaptable, and strategic describe the former active duty military members who are the founders of and collaborators in Tomahawk Pictures. It all started at The Half King Bar in Chelsea. A writer's group made up of vets formed the production company and leveraged their military experience to produce hard-hitting creative content with powerful impact.

Taylor Curry, 22, always had his heart set on attending a private college but didn't know how he'd afford it. That was before he heard about the nonprofit called ThanksUSA.

Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team

The Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team plays nearly 100 games a year against able-bodied opponents. The Warriors play to win, but regardless of any game outcome, these men are winners before they ever step on the field. The day was filled with pageantry, patriotism and of course, inspiration from some of our nation's bravest. The Wounded Warriors returned to Long Island for the fourth time. This trip was a tough 13-10 loss to the L.I. All Stars.

Trump returns to NYC

Air Force One touched down at JFK as President Donald Trump returned to New York City Thursday. It is his first time in New York since his inauguration. Trump boarded the Intrepid floating museum to meet with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. The two world leaders came to mark the 75th anniversary of the World War II Battle of the Coral Sea. This visit was more than just ceremonial. Turnbull and Trump met beforehand to cement the longstanding alliance between the two countries.

Prosthesis for swimming

A fin-like attachment designed and made on Long Island to a prosthetic leg can help amputees swim better. The fin is made of nylon. Eschen Prosthetic and Orthotic Laboratories manufactures the leg. Dr. Todd Goldstein of Northwell Health designed it using a 3D printer.

Pay it forward with pizza

The walls at Albert's Pizza in Lake Ronkonkoma, Long Island, are decorated with empty boxes. Each one has a personalized message for someone special. So when U.S. Army veteran Thomas Conran came in for a pie, an anonymous customer already took care of the bill. The concept is pay it forward with pizza. The goal is to bring people together. They've given away more than 50 pies.
