Jersey City man who spent lifetime helping other immigrants dies from coronavirus

Shafqat Khan, who assisted recent immigrants with how to apply for driver's licenses and hosted events for people of different faiths and cultures to understand each other better after the Sept. 11 attacks, died of COVID-19 on April 14 at age 76. He left behind his wife, three children, seven grandchildren and a legacy of connections.

Largest yet: $1.3 billion contract awarded for border wall

Trump has promised to build 450 miles of wall along the border with Mexico by the end of the year. So far, the government has awarded millions of dollars in contracts for construction of 30-foot-tall barriers, along with new lighting, technology, and infrastructure. The Trump administration says it has already built 187 miles of wall. Some of it is new, but most is replacing old, much shorter barriers that officials say were not sufficient.

US northern border illegal crossings rise; many are Mexicans

Federal data shows the number of people apprehended for illegally crossing from Canada into the United States along its northern border has nearly tripled over the past three years, to almost 1,600. U.S. Customs and Border Protection statistics also show what had become apparent anecdotally: a growing portion of those are Mexican citizens.
