Zsa Zsa Gabor, actress and socialite, dead at 99

Zsa Zsa Gabor, just shy of 100 years old, died from a heart attack Sunday.

"She was so ultra-glamorous that you felt she would always be here. And many people wondered where she was. They didn't know what had happened to her," said one Zsa Zsa fan.

Gabor spent the last several years out of the spotlight as her health deteriorated. In 2011, she underwent a partial leg amputation.

Gossip columnist Rob Shuter said that's not how Gabor will be remembered, “Zsa Zsa Gabor is one of the greatest celebrities of all because she changed pop culture. If it wasn't for Zsa Zsa, we'd never have Paris Hilton, and we certainly wouldn't have Kim Kardashian."

After being named "Miss Hungary" in 1936, Gabor and her family immigrated to America around World War II. She and her younger sister Eva were socialites and household names in the 1940s.  Gabor was married several times; perhaps her most famous marriage was to Conrad Hilton, Paris Hilton's great-grandfather, from 1942 to 1947.

"She really is the American dream. She pulled herself up by her boot straps. She did it all by herself, she made a lot of money, and she was in on the joke," said Shuter.

Gabor had dozens of acting roles for TV and film, usually playing herself.  She even won a Golden Globe for "Most Glamorous Performance" in 1957.

Rob Shuter continued on and described how Gabor never let anything get to her, "Later on in life, a lot of people made fun of her, but she laughed first so ultimately she gets the last laugh.”

Gabor would have turned 100 in February.
