A police officer in Yonkers, New York, who was shot Monday evening has been released from a hospital.

The shooting happened in the area of Marshal Road and Ridge Drive around 8 p.m. when Officer Kayla Maher, 26, responded to a call of a suspicious car.

As she approached the car, gunmen opened fire on her, police said. The officers returned fire and called for backup.

Maher was hit in the face, the police commissioner said. She was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx to be treated for the gunshot wound to her jaw. She was alert during her ordeal Monday evening.

Police have two suspects in custody. One suspect was wounded.

When Maher left the hospital Tuesday afternoon, dozens of police officers cheered and clapped for her outside.

She is the daughter of a retired NYPD sergeant and is a two-year veteran of the Yonkers police force.

It is the first time a Yonkers police officer has been shot on the job in 30 years.
