A Decatur woman is recovering in a Florida hospital after a good deed went terribly wrong.

Thirty-six-year-old Atira Marshall was on her way to a family reunion in Florida when she got out of the car to help a driver in a car crash and was run over by another car.

"I saw the car in front of us stopped and it was smoking," Marshall said. "Airbags were deployed and the driver was stuck inside so my first instinct was to get out and help."

That's what Marshall did, but as she was doing so, another driver traveling down Interstate 75 in Columbia County, Florida didn't see her and ran into her.

"I felt the impact," Marshall said. "Then I felt a burning sensation."

Marshall said she flipped in the air and fell face down on the concrete.

"The car fell on top of me," Marshall said. "I immediately started asking about my leg."

Marshall told FOX 5 News via Facetime that her daughter had to break the news to her.

"My daughter told me only parts of my leg were there," Marshall said.

Medics rushed Marshall to a Florida hospital, but after three surgeries, Marshall said they were unable to save her left leg.

"In a second everything changed," Marshall said. "But I would do it again even if this is what it meant. That's just the kind of person I am."
