Woman faces murder charge after apparent road-rage incident in Clayton County

A 21-year-old woman faces a murder charge after police said she shot and killed another driver in an apparent case of road rage.

Hannah Payne appeared in court Wednesday and faces a felony charge of murder. A judge denied her request for bond.

The incident happened about 6:15 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Riverdale Road and Forest Parkway in Clayton County.

Wednesday afternoon Clayton County Police released more details in the shooting.  Investigators say Payne witnessed a hit and run near Clark Howell Highway and Highway 85.  Police said she called 911, then followed the driver, later identified as 62-year-old Kenneth Herring, for about a mile.

Police said when she got too the intersection of Riverdale Road and Forest Parkway, she cut him off. Police said Payne got out of her car holding her 9mm handgun.

"An altercation then ensued between the two of them and during that altercation, Mr. Herring was shot and killed," said Clayton County Police Major Anthony Thuman.

Payne's attorney told FOX 5 news, Payne feared for her life and during a struggle the gun went off.

Officers who responded to the scene found Herring suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.
