NYC winter storm: Several inches of snow possible for region

A winter storm brought the Big Apple its first inch of snow of the season.

The snow began to fall Monday around 8 p.m. in North Jersey, and changed over to rain in New York City as the overnight hours progressed.

The snow will still hang around for the morning commute, but is expected to exit the area Tuesday afternoon.

Warnings and Advisories

  • The NYC Department of Sanitation has issued a Snow Alert running from 4 p.m. Monday through 9 a.m. on Tuesday.
  • A winter storm warning is in effect Monday from 5 p.m. until Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Morris and Sussex counties.
  • A winter storm warning is in effect Monday from 6 p.m. until Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Sullivan County.

  • A winter storm warning is in effect Monday from 6 p.m. until Tuesday at 1 p.m. in northern Westchester, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, eastern Passaic, western Bergen and western Passaic counties.
  • A winter storm warning is in effect Monday from 7 p.m. until Tuesday at 7 p.m. in eastern and western Ulster counties.
  • A winter weather advisory is in effect Monday from 7 p.m. until Tuesday at 10 a.m. for other portions of southern Connecticut, northeast New Jersey and southeast New York.

A number of winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories are in effect for several regions of the tri-state area.

How much snow to expect?

  • Areas in North Jersey, New York City and Long Island could see 1–3 inches of snow.
  • Just north of New York City could see 2–5 inches of snow.
  • Areas north of that could see 5–7+ inches of now.

Officials say this will likely result in hazardous travel conditions and snow-covered roads for the Monday evening and Tuesday morning commute.
