NYC winter storm forecast: 'Potential for heavy snow' in area next week
NEW YORK CITY - A winter storm just days into 2025 could bring "the potential for heavy snow" to the Northeast, including parts of the New York City area.

The storm is forecast for Monday, when forecasters believe frigid artic air could pair with a system of precipitation to create snow.

"A significant pattern change is expected across much of the country as an Arctic Outbreak is forecast to spread from the Northern Plains to the south and east, leading to exceptionally high probabilities of below-normal temperatures expected across much of the East," the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center said in a post on "X."
The arctic outbreak begins on Wednesday, where the cold will stay by the first weekend of January. High temperatures by midweek will be between 20-30 degrees below what they were on Monday.
"We're talking about a big, big cool down, to say the least, especially for places up and down the East Coast as we head into really the first few weeks of January," FOX Weather Meteorologist Kendall Smith said.

After the first round of cold, two more rounds of arctic air will dive from Canada, setting up parts of the U.S. for a long-lasting arctic outbreak of freezing temperatures.

For the north, the change in weather pattern brings the first ingredient needed for snow. Any low-pressure system that develops and taps into this cold air is likely to produce snow.
"The next piece to this complicated puzzle is how stormy it is. Do we have a pattern that allows for several storms, possibly winter storms, to set up for the east and that includes the Mississippi River Valley? And the answer is, yeah, it does look like we could have a storm," FOX Weather Meteorologist Stephen Morgan said.
The National Weather Service said frozen precipitation is possible across the middle parts of the country, and heavy snow could impact the Northeast.
"Frozen precipitation is possible across the parts of the Southern Plains and Southeast with the potential for heavy snow extending northward to include much of Appalachians, Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic, Great Lakes, and Northeast," the agency said.
