A winter storm is heading to the Tri-State from the south, but will the flurries ruin your weekend plans? Here's how much snow New Yorkers could wake up to:
When is it going to snow?
Timeline:
Models are currently showing the storm spreading some snow over the region from Friday night into Saturday morning.
- Friday night/early Saturday morning: Snow expected to arrive. The National Weather Service calls for a 50% chance of showers after 1 a.m.
- Saturday morning: Threat of snow showers continues to 1 p.m., the NWS predicts.
- Early Saturday afternoon: Snow exits. Skies will be mostly cloudy, with temperatures in the mid-30s.
- Sunday: Sunny skies, with a high near 40.
How much will it snow?
What they're saying:
"High pressure is trying to hold tight, but it's going to lose out," FOX 5 NY's Mike Woods said. "So an area of low pressure is going to swing to the south of us, bringing in some clouds and some light snow showers as we get into [Saturday]. We're talking about a coating of snow."
FOX 5 NY's Liv Johnson agrees: "I think maybe a half an inch for most of us, maybe a little bit more."
By the numbers:
The National Weather Service predicts under an inch for most of the New York City area.

The agency does predict a little more for parts of New Jersey, but not by much.

It's cold!
Local perspective:
Meanwhile, the current cold air will have staying power, with forecast models indicating it will remain locked in the East in various magnitudes through the end of the month, the FOX Forecast Center said.
This will all but ensure the East Coast has its first colder-than-average January since 2022, and perhaps the coldest since 2014 or 2011.
