NYC braces for heavy rain, thunderstorms, damaging winds: Hourly forecast

New York City is set to get hit by some nasty weather.

Heavy rain, thunderstorms and damaging winds are all possible on Wednesday across the Tri-State area. NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has placed parts of the area at a Level 2 out of 5 risk of severe weather on the 5-point severe thunderstorm risk scale.

The upgrade to the Level 2 threat for the National Weather Service's office in New York is the highest December severe weather threat since 2010.

"Heavier showers and storms with gusty winds will pass through later this afternoon," FOX 5 NY's Mike Woods said in a post on X, formally Twitter.

Most major airports in the area were reporting delays of between 30 minutes and one hour on Tuesday, but delays are expected to be extensive on Wednesday and into Thursday morning. You can follow flight delays HERE.

The heaviest rain will likely occur this afternoon and early evening.

"Light to moderate side up until lunchtime, then moderate to heavy side as we head toward the afternoon and evening commute, that's the sloppy one," Woods said.

Rain

The National Weather Service calls for rain and possibly a thunderstorm, some of which could produce heavy rainfall. The chance of precipitation is 100%.

According to the agency, 2 to 3 inches of rain is likely, though locally, 4 to 5 inches is possible for southern Connecticut and Long Island. A Flood Watch is in effect for parts of Connecticut.

"Locally 4-5 of rain especially if heavy rain and embedded thunderstorms are more persistent this afternoon and early evening," the National Weather Service said.

Wind

Parts of New York City are under a wind advisory, and could see gusts up to 50 mph. Other parts of the Big Apple, as well as Long Island, are under High Wind Warnings, and could see gusts up to 60 mph.

"Gusts will be going higher was we go through the day," Woods said.

"Damaging winds will blow down numerous tree limbs, and scattered trees and power lines," the National Weather Service said. "Power outages are likely in the warning area. Holiday decorations will be blown around. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles."

Most of the severe weather is expected to move out of the region by midday Thursday.
