A small World War II-era plane crashed in Melville, Long Island, Wednesday, killing the pilot, officials said.

The North American T-6 Texan was part of the GEICO Skytypers team that performed at the Bethpage Air Show over the weekend. Six planes took off from Republic Airport in East Farmingdale and were heading to Maryland, police said.

Neighborhood residents said they saw the plane flying in formation and then pull away from the group. It crashed onto Northcote Drive, a residential street, at about 1:50 p.m., police said.

The pilot, Kenneth Johansen, 52, of Doylestown, Pa., died, police said.

Investigators said no one on the ground was hurt, calling that nothing short of a miracle.

The Federal Aviation Administration responded to the scene. The National Transportation Safety Board will continue the investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
