NEW YORK (FOX 5 NY) - Air Force Airman 1st Class Spencer Stone was stabbed four times in the torso early Thursday morning in California, reports the Air Force Times. Stone was one of three Americans who thwarted a terror attack aboard a train in France in August.
The 23-year-old is reportedly in stable condition following surgery at a hospital near Sacramento. He is expected to survive.
The stabbing occurred at 12:45 a.m. on a Sacramento street corner, report various local media. "This incident is not related to terrorism in any way," Deputy Police Chief Ken Bernard said. "We know it's not related to what occurred in France months ago." He the attack was "related to a nightclub incident" involving Stone's crowd and another group of people, the AP reported.
Stone and two other men were hailed as heroes for tackling a man carrying an AK-47 on a Paris-bound train and stopping the gunman from killing those onboard.
Stone, 23, National Guardsman Alek Skarlatos, 22, from Roseburg, Ore., and their friend, Anthony Sadler, 23, overpowered the gunman, a suspected Islamic militant, as the train sped through Belgium.
Stone spoke to the media after the incident.
“He seemed like he was ready to fight to the end,” said Stone. “So were we.”
Stone said he awakened from a deep sleep before springing into action and subduing the attacker.
One of his friends "just hit me on the shoulder and said 'Let's go,'" before moving in to tackle the gunman.
He said he turned around and saw a man holding an assault rifle and that it "looked like it was jammed and it wasn't working."
Stone said he and his friends wrestled the gunman to the ground and choked him unconscious.
Stone said he was still trying to comprehend what happened.
"It feels very unreal,” he said. “It feels like a dream."
