U.S. surgeon general promotes Obamacare in Queens

U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy spent a few hours in Jackson heights, Queens, Tuesday, promoting healthy eating, the importance of getting the flu shot and also was encouraging residents to enroll and get affordable health insurance. Murthy made stops at a local grocery store and pharmacy.  His first stop was Duane Reade.

Rep. Joe Crowley got his flu shot, and they spent some time talking about how the shot can help keep New Yorkers stay healthy this flu season.

The surgeon general also talked about the opioid crisis. He handed the pharmacist a letter, one he wrote and sent to 2.3 million health care providers all around the country.

The Turn the Tide campaign to raise awareness and help concerned Americans identify roles they can play in their community. The surgeon general also addressed the importance of health care since Nov. 1 is open enrollment for the insurance exchanges.

Many agree it is critical to have health insurance, however some residents in Jackson Heights say it is too expensive.

According to many reports, monthly insurance premiums for popular plans on healthcare.gov will rise by 25 percent on average next year. 

Murthy said that despite the headlines, the majority of people can find plans for $75 or less a month after subsidies. He said 85 percent of people will qualify for subsidies.

But there aren't enough affordable options for one working mom we spoke to. She said her insurance went up.
