TSA: Don't bring a blowtorch to the airport (or other prohibited items)

NEW YORK (FOX 5 NEWS) - Travelers: leave the blowtorches, knives, scissors, large tools, ninja weapons, and (of course) guns at home.

A Transportation Security Administration official tweeted dozens of photos of prohibited items that security officers detected at checkpoints at Newark Liberty. Knives are the most comment prohibited item that travelers bring to the airport with them, according to TSA Public Affairs spokesperson Lisa Farbstein.

She tweeted photos of sharp tools, folding knives, kitchen knives, a small crossbow, a straight-edged razor, a pink-colored stun gun, jumbo wire cutters, a large hammer, and -- yes -- even a blowtorch.

She also tweeted a photo of a .25 caliber handgun that TSA officers detected in a carryon duffel bag at Newark Wednesday morning. The traveler told security he did not realize that he was carrying his loaded gun with him. The gun was loaded.

Per protocol, police were notified and the checkpoint lane was closed until the Port Authority Police arrived," Farbstein said in a news release. "Once on the scene, the police confiscated the gun and arrested the man on state weapons charges.

The TSA is trying to raise awareness about prohibited items in carry-ons by posting these images to social media with the hashtag #ProhibitedItem.

"Passengers are responsible for the contents of bags they bring to the security checkpoint, and TSA's advice to passengers is to look through bags thoroughly before coming to the airport to make sure there are no illegal or prohibited items," Farbstein said.
