Trump draws supporters, protesters

Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump attended a GOP fundraising gala on Long Island Thursday. Several dozen protesters gathered nearby to denounce him and his views on race and immigration.

The event was held in Patchogue, not far from where an Ecuadorean immigrant was stabbed and killed in a hate crime in 2008. Some protesters said that Trump's presence opened old wounds from that crime.

Suffolk County police and local officers tried to keep protestors and supporters far away from each other. At one point, the two mixed but police quickly stepped in and diffused the situation.

Meantime, in Midtown Manhattan several hundred protesters gathered outside a hotel where Republicans were holding a gala. The protesters chanted anti-Trump slogans and began marching through Midtown.

Fox 5's Dan Bowens said some protesters tried to force their way into the event but didn't succeed.

The group split into smaller groups that went separate ways. One group marched to Times Square.
