Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump announced Friday via Twitter that he has selected Indiana Gov. Mike Pence as his running mate.

"I am pleased to announce that I have chosen Governor Mike Pence as my Vice Presidential running mate. News conference tomorrow at 11:00 A.M," wrote Trump.

The former congressman was reported to be the presumptive GOP candidate's pick for vice president on Thursday.

Pence, a staunch conservative, was seen arriving in New York City later in the day.

Trump had scheduled a formal announcement for 11 a.m. Friday at Trump Tower in Manhattan but rescheduled the event to Saturday following the deadly attack in Nice, France that left at least 84 dead.

The announcement via Twitter is believed to be the first of its kind about a vice presidential pick.
