Trains to Long Island's east end remains suspended after derailment

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) - The Long Island Rail Road says trains to the Hamptons are expected to resume on Memorial Day after a derailment snarled travel to the popular resort area during the holiday weekend.

Train service to the east end of Long Island hasbeen suspended since the first day of Memorial Day weekend after an early morning derailment on the Long Island Rail Road.

The LIRR tweeted that the derailment followed a "slow-speed impact" between a passenger train and a work train at around 4 a.m. Saturday. No injuries were reported.

Railroad officials said they expect service east of Patchogue to be suspended all day Saturday.

That means there will be no trains to the popular vacation destinations of Montauk and the Hamptons on the first day of the holiday weekend.
