NEW YORK (FOX5NY) - NJ Transit service and Amtrak train service between Newark and New York were suspended for nearly three hours on Friday morning due to a bridge being stuck in the open position. Northeast Corridor and New Jersey Coast Line service remained subject to up to 30-minute delays and cancellations.
The aging Portal Bridge was not able to close properly at about 5:30 a.m. Train service resumed just before 8:30 a.m.
NJ Transit said that PATH was cross-honoring tickets at Newark, Hoboken and 33rd St. in Manhattan. Midtown Direct trains were still being diverted to Hoboken. NJ Transit buses, private carriers and NY Waterway were also cross-honoring rail tickets.
The plans to replace the Portal Bridge are part of a massive redevelopment plan to build two new tunnels into Manhattan. The funding is in question because President Trump has vowed to block any Federal spending on the project.
