The ground-breaking science fiction show "The X-Files" is returning to television after more than 13 years off the air, FOX announced Tuesday.
David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will reprise their iconic roles of Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, respectively. They played FBI agents tasked with investigating the paranormal and unexplained.
Creator Chris Carter is also on board for the six-episode "event" series, as the network is calling it.
"I think of it as a 13-year commercial break," Carter said in a statement released by FOX. "The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories."
After the news broke, Gillian Anderson tweeted: "Mulder, it's me. Are you ready?"
Duchovny tweeted a photo of himself and Anderson in character and said: "It's been 13 years, hope my suits still fit."
The original show ran nine seasons from 1993 to 2012. Duchovny appeared in only a few episodes in final two seasons, and Anderson's role in the final season was diminished.
Two feature films were released, in 1998 and 2008.
Production on the new series will begin this summer.
FOX, 20th Century Fox Television, and MyFoxNY.com are owned by the same parent company.
