NEW YORK - A reputed gang member has been indicted for allegedly firing the bullet that struck and killed 14-year-old Aamir Griffin in 2019 in what authorities say was a case of mistaken identity.
Sean Brown, 18, was arrested by authorities in Los Angeles, California last month and brought back to New York. He was arraigned Wednesday on murder and weapons charges.
Brown is being held without bail.
Griffin lived in South Jamaica, Queens, and died on October 26, 2019. Authorities say Brown ran up to the basketball court where Griffin was playing, mistaking him for a rival gang member. Brown allegedly fired three shots from a .380-caliber handgun, one of the bullets struck Griffin and killed him.
The killing devastated the local community along with Griffin's extended family. Griffin was an aspiring basketball player and student at Cardoza High School at the time of his death.
