Suspect shot, killed during gunfight with police
VINELAND, N.J. (AP) — Prosecutors say police shot and killed a robbery suspect who exchanged gunfire with them.
But another suspect fled the scene and remains at large.
The shooting in Vineland occurred shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday.
Cumberland County prosecutors say city police responding to reports of shots fired found a robbery victim. But the two assailants had fled before officers arrived.
The suspects were found a short time later, and a foot pursuit ensued. Prosecutors say at least one suspect exchanged gunfire with an officer.
The wounded suspect. 31-year-old Richard Bard Jr. of Bridgeton, was pronounced dead at a hospital. The officer who shot him was placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in police-involved shootings.
The officer's name was not released.
The robbery victim was hospitalized in stable condition.
