Street named in honor of ambushed cop

NEW YORK (AP) — A New York City street has been renamed in honor of a police officer who was ambushed and killed last year in a parked police vehicle.

What is now Detective Miosotis Familia Way is part of Ryer Avenue by the Bronx stationhouse where Familia worked. A renaming ceremony was held Thursday, the anniversary of her death.

Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio called Familia "one of the finest examples you will ever see of the American dream."

Familia was writing in her notebook in an RV-like police vehicle when ex-convict Alexander Bonds strode up and shot her through a window. Officers later killed Bonds.

Bonds had railed about police and prison officers in a Facebook video months earlier.

Familia was an officer for 12 years while raising three children. She was 48.
