Elana Simon, 19, of New York City, and Grant Goodman, 15, of Sea Cliff, Long Island, are being recognized nationally for their involvement in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Grant attended the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference and Elana even got to meet President Obama.
Grant is not your typical 15-year-old. He loves fencing and playing tennis but his true passion is computer programming. In just two years, this North Shore high school freshman has gone from attending Yale Tech camp to becoming CEO of his own software company.
Elana Simon is a freshman at Harvard University. We caught up with her via Skype. When she was 12, she was diagnosed with a rare form of liver cancer. Elana says it was her illness that drove her to pursue cancer research.
Grant has already published five apps. His favorite is Prodigus, similar to YouTube but without the ads. Now Grant is actually in the process of programming an app for his school that will allow students to remotely sign up for community service events and track their hours through an iPad or cell phone.
The future is bright for both students who feel strongly technology is the way the world is going. Even with all their work and high pressure lifestyle, both teens say they still manage to have fun. They told me when you love what you do, it doesn't really feel like work.
