Second chances at Brooklyn Democracy Academy
NEW YORK (FOX 5 NEWS) - There's something to be said for earning what you get in life. Brooklyn Democracy Academy senior Casey Smalls didn't take the easy path. But in her case, it makes the outcome so much more rewarding.
The youngsters ages 16 to 24 that attend this transfer high school in Brownsville share one thing in common. They all need a second chance. Brooklyn Democracy is a program of JCCA, a major child and family service organization.
They come by word of mouth. For the social, emotional and academic support; the program is accelerated, an attractive component for those who are behind.
Here they acknowledge the whole child. Something made possible by small class sizes and a strong mentoring component.
Thursday, it all came together. A young girl from the neighborhood who walked down her struggles is walking up to the limitless possibilities that come with education. Nothing given -- all earned.
