Red light camera cut down on Long Island

NEW YORK (FOX 5 NY) - Contractors repaired the red-light camera pole at the intersection of County Road 83 and Old Town Road in Coram, Long Island, Wednesday morning. Suffolk County police say it was cut down earlier this week.

This picture taken from Stephen Ruth's Facebook page Monday night shows the pole on the ground. You may know him as Red Light Robin Hood for his stunt tampering with red-light cameras last year. While Ruth insists it wasn't him, he says people are doing what they should've been a long time ago.

Commissioner Gil Anderson with the Department of Public Works says the cameras at 100 intersections are for public safety. Last year, the county collected more than $25 million in revenue and fees. Anderson told us the cameras can be removed altogether if there are fewer accidents.

Suffolk County Police say they haven't decided whether the person or people responsible for damaging the camera will be held accountable for the lost money while it was out of service.
