NEW YORK (FOX 5 NEWS) - Cell phone video depicts a dangerous trend seen more and more on Long Island: Kids on bikes disrupting drivers by swerving into oncoming traffic.
Parent Sue Kavanagh said she recognizes some of the boys. She said they're good kids making bad choices. It's important for parents to be aware.
"A lot of times there's seven to 15 kids riding along Main Street, covering the block on each side of the road, laughing, they're cursing. I've had my car hit into," she said. "I have friends in Babylon, West Islip, Port Jefferson, Kings Park. It's happening in a lot of places and kids are just trying to show off."
Officials said the trend started in New York City and moved to the suburbs over the summer. Part of the issue is that chasing the kids is dangerous so they end up getting away.
"No one wants to stop them from riding their bicycles," Legislator Tom Cilmi, R-Bay Shore, said. but we want to stop them from weaving in and out of traffic and playing chicken with 3,000-pound vehicles,"
Officials are asking parents to talk to their children before it gets any worse.
