Randall's Island migrant shelter curfew goes into effect

The curfew proposed by NYC Mayor Adams is set to go into effect Wednesday night at the migrant shelter on Randall's Island.

City Hall says the policy is consistent with other city-run facilities.

The 11 p.m. - 6 a.m. curfew will apply to approximately 3,000 migrants.

The curfew exemptions include work, traveling to school, legal and medical appointments, and emergencies.

Officials say the curfew will allow for more efficient bed capacity management.

"This policy will allow for more efficient capacity management for migrants in the city’s care," the City Hall spokesperson added.

This comes after a recent rash of violent incidents at the shelter.

In February, the city installed metal detectors at the shelter after a 23-year-old migrant struck a security guard in the face, causing a scuffle. At least two migrants were placed under arrest and charged, but this marks the third violent incident to occur at this shelter in just the last several months.
