Program helps veterans get housing in Brooklyn complex

NEW YORK (FOX 5 NEWS) - Five formerly homeless veterans now have a place they can call home in Brooklyn. 

They moved into a Stanley Commons, a six-building complex in East New York, thanks to a program from the city's Department of Veterans' Services in collaboration with other city agencies, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and the complex itself.

Mack Jenkinson, who served in the U.S. Army, was one of them. He told Fox 5 that he was homeless for more than a year but that ended Friday. 

This year, about a thousand veterans have been housed under the program.

Maya Richardson served in the U.S. Air Force. She just recently moved in after being homeless for a few months. 

The 240-unit building is part of Mayor Bill de Blasio's 10-year housing plan to either build or preserve 200,000 apartments across the five boroughs for affordable housing.
