Power outages across the region following Halloween storm

The tri-state is cleaning up after a Halloween storm packing powerful winds and severe thunderstorms blew across the region.

Storms that began on Halloween killed at least two people, caused flooding, downed trees and power lines and damaged homes across the Northeast on Friday.

The storm ripped through Long Beach, Long Island, cutting power for thousands in Nassau County.

Vicious gusts showed no mercy on Suffolk County, uprooted trees that landed on cars.

A falling tree struck and trapped a trick-or-treater in New Rochelle.  Police told The Journal News a resident pulled the 9-year-old out and she was taken to a hospital for treatment of fractures.

More than 200,000 customers were without power in New York state after a night of heavy rain and wind gusts of up to 70 mph.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo told Spectrum News on Friday that several hundred people were being evacuated in scattered areas around the state because of high waters. Police in the central New York village of Dolgeville used a boat to rescue people from a home. Officials in nearby Oneida County advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel.

The Buffalo area was dealing with flash flooding after 4 to 5 inches of rain.

In New Jersey, utilities on Friday reported 25,455 homes and businesses were without power. Most were in Monmouth and Mercer counties.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for parts of Mercer, Middlesex and Somerset counties early Friday as a severe thunderstorm moved through Pennington. However, there were no reports of any tornados touching down.

A wind advisory remained in effect until noon for Sussex, Warren, Middlesex, Monmouth, Mercer, Cape May and Atlantic counties. Wind gusts up to 50 mph are possible.
