Watch: Pacific Palisades neighborhoods destroyed by fire

Stu Mundel gave us an aerial view of the devastation of the Palisades fire.

The Palisades Fire leveled entire neighborhoods, turning homes into nothing more than smoldering piles of rubble.

With winds slightly calmer on Thursday, SkyFOX was able to get into the air and give us a first look at the devastation left behind after Tuesday’s wind-whipped blaze.

From above, SkyFOX reporter Stu Mundel was able to use the helicopter’s map-overlay technology to get a sense of the geography north of Sunset Boulevard. The overlay was about the only way to tell what had been there before.

"When you get that wider shot, you just think we're just looking at a neighborhood," Stu said as the map flashed up names like Embury, Fiske, Galloway, and Hartzell streets. "But then when you really kind of push in, you can see every single home out here just leveled. You've got the chimneys, you've got some of the walls might still be standing. But the devastation is complete and just jaw-dropping. I'm really not playing. I have no words to describe this entire neighborhood; just gone."

Stu estimated the destruction in the Rustic Canyon neighborhood alone to be at least 500 homes, "maybe more."

"This is something that I, personally, have never seen," he added. "And again, I would venture to say a lot of other folks watching it have never seen, especially here in the southern California area."

Possible remains found in Eaton, Palisades fire

Authorities were investigating possible human remains found in the Eaton and Palisades fires.

The Palisades Fire was first reported around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, near Piedra Morada and Monte Hermoso drives, in the area of the Palisades Hills Recreation Center.

In the latest update Thursday, the fire had grown to 19,978 acres with 0 percent containment, and evacuation orders remained in place. Cal Fire said that 5,316 structures had been destroyed.

Five people have been confirmed dead in the neighboring Eaton Fire, and officials fear that, as they begin to sift through the rubble in Pacific Palisades, they'll find fire victims who were unable to escape.

Los Angeles County deputies said Thursday that as they were doing a wellness check, they found what they believe were human remains. It's believed that remains were found at four different locations, including two in Malibu.
