Ohio police officer, 4-year-old girl shot in St. Clair Township; suspect in custody

An Ohio police officer and a four-year-old child were shot Wednesday in St. Clair Township.

St. Clair Township Police said they received a call about a possibly suicidal man walking down the street. When officers tried to talk with him, he opened fire. 

Officers then returned fire, hitting the suspect. 

What we know:

Authorities said one officer was shot in the head and a four-year-old child was struck by a bullet. 

The injured officer was responsive after getting hit and was transferred to a Pittsburgh-area hospital in critical condition. 

What we don't know:

The child was also flown to a hospital in an unknown condition. According to 21 News, the girl was shot in the head while at a nearby dentist's office.  

Officers also treated the suspected gunman and his condition is unknown. 

What they're saying:

"We’re trying to gather information as fast as we can so we can update the community," St. Clair Township Police Chief Brian McKenzie said on the department's Facebook page. "Right now, we need the community to pray for our officer and the child who were shot."

What's next:

The Ohio Bureau of Investigation (BCI) is investigating the case.
