An off-duty rookie New York City correction officer was fatally shot while she was sitting in a car outside a home in the Flatlands neighborhood of Brooklyn Sunday night.
Police found Alastasia Bryan, 25, with gunshot wounds to her head and torso. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The New York Post reported that a man apparently got out of a car, fired several shots into Bryan's car, and then drove away.
A motive for the shooting remains unclear. Police continue to investigate and have not made any arrests.
Bryan had been visiting family in the neighborhood and was about to head to Rikers Island for a shift. She just graduated the academy in November.
"On behalf of all New Yorkers, I want to extend my deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of Alastasia Bryan -- a rising member of New York City's Department of Correction who was senselessly murdered yesterday in Brooklyn," Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a statement. "The NYPD is working aggressively to find the person responsible for this heinous act and will maintain its pursuit until they are brought to justice."
The Correction Officers' Benevolent Association has issued a statement saying the correction family is "shocked and grieving the horrific murder" of Bryan.
Statement from COBA on the Murder of an Off Duty City Correction Officer:
"Tonight our correction family and the entire City of New York is shocked and grieving the horrific murder of one of the youngest members of New York City's Boldest, who was shot and killed by an unknown assailant while sitting in her car in Brooklyn. There are no words that can express the depth of this tragedy. The COBA will do everything we can to support the officer's family during this time and we will not rest until the assailant or assailants are brought to justice." --Elias Husamudeen, COBA President
