Police shooting in Canarsie

Timeline:

The shooting occurred after officers heard a gunshot while patrolling Canarsie, NYPD Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera said during a late-night news conference.

At around 9:45 p.m., four uniformed officers in two unmarked cars heard the single gunshot near Flatlands Avenue and E 80th Street. They observed a man exiting a convenience store at 776 E 80th Street and running north.

The officers pursued the man on foot and in vehicles, identifying themselves and instructing him to stop.

The perp reportedly ran behind a tree and pointed a gun at a uniformed sergeant, prompting four officers to discharge their firearms, according to Rivera.

What we know:

The man was struck in the torso and taken into custody. He was transported to Brookdale University Hospital in critical condition. A firearm was recovered at the scene, and a ghost gun was found inside the store.

What they're saying:

"Our officers were confronted with a dangerous individual, armed with a firearm, and reacted without hesitation. Due to their actions, further violence was prevented," Rivera said.

What we don't know:

Police have not released the name of the man who was shot after pointing a gun at officers. It is also unclear why a ghost gun was found in the convenience store and why a shot was fired before the police pursuit.
