Target of Brooklyn gunman fatally shot by NYPD arrested in unrelated case

A suspect was fatally shot by NYPD officers in Brooklyn on Monday afternoon as he was chasing after two other people, and now, police say the man the gunman was chasing has been arrested and charged in an unrelated case.

The man, identified as 19-year-old Jeremiah Adams, was arrested for attempted murder, robbery, and criminal possession of a weapon in connection to a March 7 case in Brownsville.

Adams hasn’t been charged in relation to Monday's shooting in East Flatbush, but according to the New York Post, who cited police sources, the gunman was chasing after Adams for mugging him moments earlier.

Timeline: What happened on Monday?

Ring camera video showed the moment gunfire was exchanged on Monday between police and the shooter, sending people running and ducking for cover.

According to investigators, four uniformed officers were in an unmarked patrol car near the intersection of East 57th Street and Remsen Avenue just before 6 p.m. when they were alerted to an active shooter situation.

After canvasing the area for a few minutes, the officers rounded a corner and located the 20-year-old gunman, who was running down the street and firing off shots at the two people. Police allege that's when the four officers jumped out of their car and returned fire.

"What they see is a male chasing another male and female firing numerous rounds trying to shoot them. Our officers jumped out quickly, and they take care of the threat," said NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell.

East Flatbush residents respond to NYPD fatally shooting gunman in neighborhood

There are still more questions than answers about what set off the dangerous shooting rampage. The community is uneasy but believe it's a sign of the times.

Police said the gunman was shot multiple times and rushed to Kings County Hospital, where he died from his injuries. His identity is unknown. A firearm was recovered from the scene. The two people were not injured.

According to police, a 60-year-old innocent bystander, who neighbors identified as a street mechanic, was shot twice by cross fire. He’s expected to be OK, although it's not clear who shot him.

"Once again, our officers looking for perpetrators ran in the middle of gunfire, stopped the threat and saved two people’s lives," Chell added.
