New York City is creating 220 new sports teams for more than 3,000 schoolchildren. And one focus is on creating new teams for girls. A new season means new opportunities for the Morrisania Knights varsity soccer team in the Bronx. Coach Jorge Luna says the $4 million expansion of the Public Schools Athletic League gives small schools like his the benefit of team activity.

Senior captain Aldair Hernandez knows playing in the bigger city league could lead to big opportunities. Meanwhile, Morrisania girls team coach Kelly Connolly is still looking to fill out her roster. She says two or three more girls join every day.

The push is coming on the heels of a federal ruling that found New York City wasn't doing enough to provide athletics to girls.

Freshman goalie Yadhila Flores is already seeing the benefits of being on this squad, which didn't exist this time last year.
