NYC dog owners worried about canine flu
Canine influenza is a new strain of the flu that has pet owners worried. The virus reportedly arrived in the U.S. last spring and has since caused outbreaks in 26 states across the country. In the New York area, Long Island City has seen many dogs affected. Members of the Facebook group DOG LIC have been posting warnings in for other dog owners.
The disease is transferred similar to how humans get the flu - it can be airborne or dog to dog interaction.
The New Yorkers we talked to says the news will make them keep a closer eye out for symptoms.
The percentage of dogs infected with this disease that die is actually very small, according to the CDC. That being said, it is highly contagious and officials say if you notice that your dog has a cough schedule an appointment right away.
