HARLEM - A 4-year-old boy was found dead inside a home in Harlem, and his mother was being questioned by police as the medical examiner looks for a cause of death, according to sources.
The child was discovered unconscious and unresponsive by police on Sunday just before 8 p.m. at a home on Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard.
Sources told FOX 5 NY's Lisa Evers that the grandmother of the boy has been located, and she told investigators that she has the other three siblings with her. Police want his grandmother to bring those children to the local precinct so they can see what condition they are in.
According to police, the child was taken to Harlem Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Sources say the boy's father called 911 when he found the child unresponsive in the 6th floor apartment.
Paramedics found the child unconscious, but kept him alive, rushing him to the hospital, which is about 10 blocks away. Sources say doctors and staff did everything they could to keep him alive, but he was pronounced dead this morning around 5:50 a.m.
The child's mother was brought to the 32nd precinct for questioning.
Several residents told FOX 5 that the mother always wore the same dirty looking clothes and was never seen with her four children or bringing food to them.
Neighbors said they tried to offer her clothes, but never took them.
As of now, there are no charges against the parents.
Police are waiting for the results of the Medical Examiner's investigation which will reveal the cause of the boy's death.
The identity of the child is being withheld pending notification.
